Here in the South, we LOVE our cocktails. Every Friday the Southern Foodies like to share one of our favorite Southern-Traditional, Southern-Created or Southern-Inspired Cocktail Recipes we know you will enjoy.
Today’s Southern Cocktail, the Darkened Manhattan from Proof on Main in Louisville is a sweeter, more flavorful version of the tradition Manhattan.
Southern Cocktail #9 is Darkened Manhattan Cocktail
The Manhattan Cocktail is an undisputed classic, in the same class as the Martini, Gin and Tonic and The Old Fashioned. Ever since the Manhattan was created, most likely sometime in the mid-1860s or 70s, people have loved it. Unlike many of its contemporaries, it has never gone out of style or lagged in popularity.
Also like the Martini and Old Fashioned, bartenders and casual drinkers alike, love to play with the recipe. The are literally thousands of variations on the traditional Manhattan Cocktail in recipe books (indeed entire books containing only Manhattan Cocktail Variations – see below) and spread across the web. Some are quite good, like the Rob Roy, the Black Manhattan and the Cuban Manhattan.
But, here is a variation that you have likely never seem before. The Darkened Manhattan is a cross between a traditional Manhattan and a Black Russian. And since discovering it at Proof on Main here in Louisville, I have been unable to find any other mention of it in any book or on the web, despite extensive searching. It is likely that it was invented here – although I can’t confirm that either. Please let me know if you have any information about this cocktail.
But more importantly, please try The Darkened Manhattan for yourself. It is quite good.
