Just one bite of Kentucky Transparent Pie with its sweet, custard filling and you’ll be hooked for life.
Kentucky Transparent Pie
Transparent pie is a Kentucky tradition. It has a simple sugary liquid filling that is baked down in a shell and closely resembles other pies from the region, including New England’s chess pies, Pennsylvania’s shoofly pies or Indiana’s sugar pies. The main difference seeming to me the addition of brown sugar to the granulated sugar.
Transparent Pie originated in Maysville, Kentucky about 70 miles northeast of Lexington. Magee’s bakery in Maysville is well-known for it’s Transparent Pies and make a small tart version that is said to be a favorite of George Clooney, who grew up in the area.
Many of Kentucky’s pies feature bourbon. I’ll see if I can find a recipe for one of those.
