Today’s Southern Cocktail is another potent but oh-so smooth New Orleans’ classic.
Southern Cocktail #03 is The Vieux Carre Cocktail
The Vieux Carre Cocktail is a potent 1930s-era New Orleans recipe. It is named for the city’s French Quarter. Like the Crescent City, it’s strong – but smooth, like the blues.

The Vieux Carre Cocktail Recipe
Materials
- 3/4 ounce Rye Whiskey
- 3/4 ounce Cognac
- 3/4 ounce Sweet Vermouth
- 1 teaspoon Bénédictine
- 2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- Lemon Peel to garnish
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients, except garnish, in an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir well to chill.
- Strain into an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass.
- Garnish.
